Courage and Hope – the Heart of Being Human

What is man that you are mindful of him? (Psalm 8:4)

The psalmist’s question echoes through the centuries. Perhaps it will not be answered until the fulfilment of all things. It is hard to argue with those who describe human beings as the creatures who destroy their own nest; uniquely among the members of the animal kingdom, humans destroy what they need for their own survival.

On the other hand, we see outstanding examples of humanity, often in the midst of the destruction wrought by the worst human impulses. Without romanticising war and terror, it is often in these times that the image of the truly human shines through.

Having focused on the three persons of the Trinity in the first three issues of this year, it seems appropriate in this issue to turn to the human being, and in particular to those qualities that allow our true nature to shine forth.
